Join Alpiq as a Battery Trader
Alpiq is rapidly expanding its footprint in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across Europe, including our own assets as well as tolling and third-party portfolios. As we enhance our operations and market offering for battery flexibility (including wholesale and ancillary services), we are seeking a talented Battery Trader to take ownership of managing long-term risks associated with BESS contracts and assets. This critical role will help stabilize cash flows while allowing for potential upside from flexibility. The position can be based in either Lausanne or Olten, Switzerland.
Your Responsibilities
- Manage the long-term BESS risk portfolio: identify, quantify, and address structural risks arising from merchant revenues, ancillary services, degradation, and contractual features (such as tolling floors/caps, indexation, and availability regimes).
- Design and implement hedging strategies across the European power markets, and integrate cross-commodity approaches where relevant, to stabilize cash flows and protect against downside risks while maintaining upside potential.
- Assist in pricing and structuring long-dated battery exposures.
- Trade options and structures to manage the optionality embedded in BESS operations and contracts.
- Collaborate closely with Origination/Business Development, Intraday/Asset Trading, Analytics/Quants, Risk, Legal, and IT/Algo teams to ensure that pricing, booking, and risk monitoring are accurate and comprehensive.
- Contribute to model specifications, conduct stress tests, and oversee risk governance; propose limits and key risk indicators (KRIs), and help refine profit and loss (P&L) and exposure reporting for battery operations.
- Maintain an awareness of market and regulatory conditions across European reserve and flexibility products (FCR/aFRR/tertiary), capacity mechanisms, and balancing rules, and effectively translate these impacts into trading and hedging actions, in alignment with teams managing these products.
Your Profile
- Over 5 years of experience in trading European energy (power/gas) with a proven track record in risk management and P&L delivery.
- A strong foundation in Financial Theory and Asset Pricing, including knowledge of stochastic processes, options/real-options, and term-structure modeling.
- Experience in Power Intraday markets and Ancillary Services.
- Hands-on battery pricing and trading experience.
- Background in commodity options and structured products trading.
- Fluency in English, with additional European languages being an advantage.
- Willingness to work onsite in Lausanne or Olten.
